Family and Life Stage Ministries

On this page, you will find information on a variety of family and life stage – centered ministries at UniLu. Follow these links to jump to a specific section of the page:

Children have an important place in the life and spirit of University Lutheran. UniLu is a church family that cherishes our children and encourages them to feel at home in their church.

UniLu offers a Bread ☩ Belonging family-friendly, no-shushing worship service, developed in collaboration with UniLu parents and kids, at 9 am during the academic year. This service includes a kids’ time, sermon, and communion. Children are always welcome at the 10:30 am service as well.

Our nursery, located on the second floor, is open every Sunday morning from 9 am to noon for children up to five years of age. Nursery care is also provided during many special worship services and congregational meetings.

During communion, parents are encouraged to bring their children with them to receive bread and a blessing. (This includes children who spend the rest of the service in the nursery.) When children begin to ask about the meaning of communion, parents are encouraged to ask for pastoral instruction. Children who have completed a short series of classes with the pastor can begin to receive wine or grape juice. Often this occurs around the fifth grade.

We also offer services especially designed for families in the early evening on Christmas Eve and Good Friday.

UniLu’s pastors, sometimes working with other staff or volunteers, lead pre-confirmation classes for junior high school students. Our two-year program offers a basic education in the Bible, Lutheran theology, and applying church teachings to everyday life, and concludes with the opportunity to publicly affirm their baptism during morning worship. If you or your child are interested in confirmation classes, please speak with one of the pastors or write to kids@unilu.org.

We have a small but fun group of teens at Unilu (post-confirmation middle schoolers and high schoolers). A lot of activities for this group are spontaneously organized, but the group is open to new arrivals. Recently, we marched in the annual Mother’s Day Walk for Peace in Dorchester to protest handgun violence, and made a cross-country road trip to the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit.

Seniors at UniLu are active in all aspects of congregational life, often leading activities such as vigils and seminars. UniLu potlucks and other fun events are designed to be intergenerational, letting members connect across all age ranges. In addition, Senior Brunches are held several times a year which give seniors a chance to connect with each other – sometimes at UniLu, and sometimes at the home of a member or pastor.

We have an active program to visit shut-ins and bring them communion on a regular basis.

Women’s Ministry

All women in the congregation are welcome at the gatherings of Women of University Lutheran Church. The mission statement of the national Women of the ELCA describes the goals of UniLu’s local group as well: “As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.”

Watch the UniLu calendar for information about our meetings, which take place several times a year. For more information, write to women@unilu.org
