The UniLu community mourns the death of Rachel (Marak) Pollari, beloved mother of Chris Pollari and mother-in-law of Ann Ferentz, on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. She died at the Belmont Manor Nursing Home, where she has resided for the past several years.

Rachel was born on March 3, 1922 in Robinson, Kansas to Piermin J. Marak and Bessie (Olson) Marak. She was married for 44 years to Theodore J. Pollari, who predeceased her in 1995.

Rachel graduated in 1944 from the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Church and her Christian faith remained central to Rachel throughout her life. She worked in Lutheran churches in Lake Mills, Iowa; Robinson, Kansas; Portland, Oregon; and Brooklyn, Connecticut. After settling in South Carolina, she was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Rock Hill, for 35 years. As a greeter, she was almost invariably the first person to meet every new member.

After moving to the Boston area, Rachel worshiped at University Lutheran whenever her health permitted. In her final years, she welcomed the UniLu visitors who brought communion and conversation. “She was beloved by all who met her, whether for a few minutes or a lifetime,” Chris said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris and Ann; with Chris’s sister Helen Howell (husband Mark) and brother Gregory (wife Tami); and Rachel’s three grandchildren, Benjamin Howell, Rachel Ann Pollari, and Devin Howell. Memorial services will take place at UniLu and at Grace Lutheran Church, Rock Hill, South Carolina at a later date.
